About the course
Studying German at A level will help students to develop the ability to use the language effectively for practical communication and to form a sound basis of the skills and language required for further study, work and leisure purposes. It will also provide an insight into the culture, civilization and social life of Germany and promote greater knowledge and enjoyment of German speaking countries, encouraging an interest in contemporary issues and extending an awareness of language and its uses.
The A level qualification is the usual pre-requisite for the further study of a language in Higher Education, but is also an extremely useful addition to anyone’s CV given that competition in Europe is becoming increasingly important. An A level in German gives a good foundation for the study of modern foreign languages at degree level and can often be used in conjunction with an additional subject, for example, Business Studies.
Given the fact that the number of 16 to 18-year-olds studying A level German dropped by 34% between 2000 and 2004, you are likely to have a very small number of students wishing to take German at A Level. We can make this cost effective for you without limiting your sixth form choices.
