A GCSE in Law will not only give students a comprehensive introduction into a fascinating subject, but will start the process of critical thinking.
GCSE Law involves a study of the Legal System of England and Wales. Students will gain a knowledge and understanding of the following key topics:
- concepts of justice, morality and law
- the distinction between the two branches of law: criminal and civil
- the prosecution process, classification of offences and sentencing
- the structure of the courts and the system of hierarchy
- creating laws – through legislation (Acts of Parliament) and real life case law
- the role of the professionals – judges and lawyers
- the involvement of lay people – juries and magistrates
- contract law – breaches of obligations and defective consumer goods
- actions in negligence and nuisance; infringement of human rights
Students are encouraged to develop an understanding of the changing nature of law in society. Many real life cases are studied and students learn to demonstrate logical awareness and the ability to solve legal problems.
The course includes weekly tuition, marked assignments, worksheets, group work, review activities, self-assessment exercises, quizzes, websites, e-case book.
Course requirements
There are no particular requirements, but students should have reasonable reading and essay writing skills and be willing to tackle independent research
