Health and Social Care GCSE
Exam Board: WJEC
A GCSE in Health and Social Care gives students a great introduction into different areas of health care and social care, providing a solid grounding for students looking to do further vocational qualifications.
Students will gain a knowledge and understanding of the following key topics:
- Understanding Personal Development and Relationships
- Health, Social Care and Early Years Provision
- Promoting Health and Well-being
- Safeguarding and Protecting Individuals
- Health, Social Care and Early Years in Practice
The course includes weekly tuition, worksheets, marked assignments and group work.
Schools may choose whether to follow the Single Award Syllabus, which gives students 1 GCSE, or the Double Award Syllabus, which gives students 2 GCSEs. Both Awards will be completed over 2 years.
For both Awards, it is important that schools have a support teacher in the classroom to supervise and take charge of organising the internal assessments.
Single Award
Year 1:
- Candidates will complete Unit 2 ‘Human Growth and Development’ which is assessed via written examination at the end of the first year.
Year 2:
- Candidates will complete Unit 1 ‘Health, Social Care and Children’s Services’. This is assessed through a portfolio of coursework and candidates will spend a number of hours in a controlled assessment.
Double Award
Year 1:
- Candidates will complete Unit 1 ‘Health, Social Care and Children’s Services’. This is assessed through a portfolio of coursework and candidates will spend a number of hours in a controlled assessment.
- Candidates will complete Unit 2 ‘Human Growth and Development’ which is assessed via written examination at the end of the first year.
Year 2:
- Candidates will complete Unit 3 ‘Maintaining Health and Well-Being’ which is assessed via written examination at the end of the second year.
- Candidates will complete Unit 4 ‘Promoting Health and Well-Being’ which is assessed through a portfolio of coursework and candidates will spend a number of hours in a controlled assessment.
